Tourist Visa Policy for Ghana

The tourist visa policy of Ghana states that the majority of foreign nationals are required to apply for a visa to visit the country for tourism purposes.

There are currently only around 20 countries who can travel to Ghana visa-free for tourism, the majority located in Western Africa.

All other foreign citizens planning to travel to Ghana for tourism purposes are required to obtain an approved tourist visa to do so, either a consular visa or a visa on arrival.

Over 30 African nationalities are able to travel to Ghana and apply for a visa on arrival at an immigration checkpoint, which will grant them a short length of stay for tourism.

However, the Ghana visa on arrival application process often involves waiting in long lines to receive a form to complete from an immigration officer.

At the moment, nationals of around 190 countries are required to obtain a tourist visa before arrival in Ghana. This visa must be applied for in person at the nearest embassy or consulate of Ghana.

However, it is expected that the Ghanaian government will soon implement an online tourist visa application, for which some of the embassy visa or visa on arrival eligible countries may be able to apply. This will greatly expedite the process of obtaining a visa for tourism for Ghana.

With the intention of expediting the visa application process and increasing tourism, business and investment opportunities for foreign visitors, the government of Ghana has announced that they will be implementing an online visa in the near future.

Once available, this online system will allow eligible citizens to obtain an approved electronic visa for Ghana sent by email. This will eliminate the need to apply in person at a government office or wait in long queues at the border to obtain a visa on arrival.

The Ghana eVisa will be available for purposes of business, tourism, or to transit through Ghana to an onward destination. The length of stay and the number of entries permitted have not yet been confirmed by the government of Ghana.

In order to apply, it will be necessary to complete an online application with personal, passport, and travel information, which will take only a few minutes to complete. After that, some security-related questions will be asked and it will also be necessary to pay a fee for the visa to be approved.

Citizens eligible for the eVisa for Ghana who, are planning to spend more time in the country or travel for other purposes than those allowed with the electronic visa, such as to work or study, will be required to obtain an embassy visa from the nearest Ghanaian diplomatic office.

As the government of Ghana has yet to announce full details of the eVisa system, travelers are advised to periodically check this page to keep track of any updates.

The government of Ghana has yet to to publish the requirements to obtain the online visa.  However it is expected that, depending on the purpose of the visit, some additional supporting documentation will be requested.

Additionally, Ghana visa requirements also establish that once the visitor arrives at the Ghanaian border with an approved eVisa it will be necessary to convince the immigration officer of the following statements in order to gain entry:

  • The traveler is only intending to spend a short period of time in Ghana.
  • The visitor will leave the country before the expiry date of the approved visa.
  • The traveler does not intend to study in a Ghanaian educational institution.
  • The visitor does not intend to seek work in Ghana while traveling with an eVisa.
  • The traveler will have sufficient funds for the full stay in Ghana.

The visa on arrival is a type of visa that travelers from over 30 African Union countries can obtain once they arrive in Ghana at a designated immigration checkpoint.

This travel authorization allows holders to spend up to 30 days in Ghana for tourism or business purposes.

Once eligible citizens arrive at a entry point of Ghana they will have to go directly to a border checkpoint to wait in line until an immigration officer hands them a visa on arrival form to complete. This application form must be filled in with personal, passport, and travel information.

To receive an approved Ghana visa on arrival, the applicant will also have to pay a visa on arrival fee after completing the form.

Visitors are advised that the process of obtaining a visa on arrival can involve standing in long queues and a significant amount of waiting time.

Visa on arrival citizens who wish to visit Ghana for more than 30 consecutive days are required to apply for a Ghanian embassy visa.
