Saudi Arabia to stop retaining passports of Indian airline crew on arrival

An Air India spokesperson has confirmed that the Saudi Arabian government will no longer retain the passports of the Indian airline crew members on arrival in the country. Insteady, the government will now issue a bar code that will be valid for a limited period. The latest move will bring a relief to crew members of Jet Airways and Air India which fly to Saudi Arabia. The spokesperson from Air India confirmed that Indian authorities had taken up the issue with the Saudi officials after crew members faced inconvenience in the country as officials confiscated their original passports and left them with only photocopies during their stay. As a result, the decision to stop retaining the passport of the Indian airlines crew members came into effect from mid-February this year. The latest decision comes on the backdrop of an incident that took place in July 2017, when four crew members of Air India were detained by the Saudi Arabian police in Jeddah as they did not possess original copies of their passport.
