The idea is being floated by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar in light of rising footfalls of foreign students here.

The proposal, which is yet to be discussed at any level, will also cover postgraduate education and research students pursuing PhDs.

The move comes amid concerns that there are only 5,000 international schools as compared with over 70 lakh Indian ones; even though India is keen on attracting more international students and faculty members, it lacks infrastructure and quality control mechanisms.”We have asked MHA (ministry of home affairs) to give permission for 10 years’ long multiple entry visas so that they can stay back even if they fail their exams,” Javadekar said while speaking at a function on skill development at Lovely Professional University here last week.”Students will get an opportunity to do something else until then,” he added

As per the information given by the Union HRD Minister, the proposal will be sent to MHA with the intention to attract more and more foreign students to India. The following points were suggested by the minister during a meeting with his counterparts from countries like Iraq, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

  • To increase student enrollment in India
  • To provide one-year visa for all engineering students who are studying in any engineering college
  • To make it easier for students coming from other countries

Students from Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the United States are most likely to benefit from this proposal.

The proposal is expected to boost Indian Tech sector which is already booming with companies like Google and Amazon setting up their offices in India. The minister also said that this initiative will help address the shortage of skilled workers faced by Indian IT firms as well as provide employment opportunities for non-resident Indians who return home after completing their education abroad.

Coming back to the proposed measures for improving quality of education in India, Javadekar has suggested that UGC and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) should come together for formulation and implementation of ‘One Program-One License’ policy.

Coming back to the proposed measures for improving quality of education in India, Javadekar has suggested that UGC and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) should come together for formulation and implementation of ‘One Program-One License’ policy. The minister said that he had discussed this idea with his counterparts in the states during his visit last month.

The minister explained that it means if a student takes admission in BTech program, then he/she will get BTech degree only after passing all exams and not just one exam to get a diploma or any other certificate as an intermediate course. Similarly, if someone wants to take admission in MBA course from professional colleges then they will have to pass all exams required for getting an MBA degree which is going to be much less than what students are currently doing now at present time.”

Another proposal suggested by him was that AICTE and UGC should come up with a common database which would include all technical courses being offered across India.

Another proposal suggested by him was that AICTE and UGC should come up with a common database which would include all technical courses being offered across India. The database will help students find the right course and also help institutions to find the right students. This is also important for the government, who can then identify appropriate institutions for offering technical education in specific areas.

This idea has been discussed in length at various forums where it was felt that this would benefit both students and institutions immensely.
