Student Visas do not allow workers and if you work or study on a student visa, you’ll also need to obtain a work permit. A work permit allows you to work full time in New Zealand. If you have a Student Visa and want to work over 20 hours per week on your Student visa, you will have to apply for a special permission from Immigration New Zealand and meet the requirements of immigration policy for employment.

TALENT WORK VISA

The following work visas are available under Talent work visa policy:

  1. Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa
  2. Talent (Long Term Skills Shortage List) Work Visa
  3. Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports) Work Visa

Having a job offer from an Accredited Employer or in an occupation on the Long Term Skills Shortage List (LTSSL) is a pre-requisite to apply for Talent (Accredited Employer) or Talent (Long Term Skills Shortage List – LTSSL) work visa. Visa is valid for 30 months and visa holders can apply for resident visa under Residence from Work visa policy after working for approved employer, in approved occupation, at approved salary for 24 months.

Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports) visa is also valid for 30 months and provides pathway to securing resident visa after being actively engaged in the relevant field for 2 years.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS WORK VISA

Essential Skills Work visa is for skilled workers with job offer from a non-accredited employer or in an occupation not on the LTSSL. To apply for Essential Skills Work Visa, you need to have a job offer from an employer:

  1. having approval in principle to recruit overseas workers; or
  2. providing evidence that no suitable New Zealand workers are available; or
  3. in an occupation on any of New Zealand’s Essential Skills in Demand List (Regional Skill Shortage List, Construction and Infrastructure Skill Shortage List).

Essential skills work visa is valid for 12 months to 5 years depending upon the skill level of the job. Essential skills work visa provides a step towards securing residence under Skilled Migrant Category as employment in New Zealand scores between 50 – 120 points including bonus points, thus increasing your points score under Skilled Migrant Category.

NON TALENT OR NON-ESSENTIAL SKILLS WORK VISA

If you have a job offer from an employer who is not Accredited or in an occupation which is neither on LTSSL nor Essential Skills in Demand List, you could still qualify for work visa, provided your employer is able to satisfy the Labour Market Test, that is to show that no New Zealand resident or citizen is available to do the job.

International students having completed an acceptable qualification in New Zealand may qualify for post-study work visa for upto 3 years depending upon the qualification level and where they studied. This is an open work visa, does not require job offer to be granted and visa holders can work for any employer in any position.
