The best time to vacation in Maui is during the summer. The average temperature in June and July is 79 degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall is 17 inches per month, so it will not be raining while you are on your trip. This time of year also has an average humidity of 77% – so bring your sunscreen!

Maui is a great place for a vacation. It’s warm, sunny, and has a lot of activities to do. The island is also very popular with tourists, so it’s important to plan your trip for the best time to visit.

It is important to note, however, that Maui’s location within the island chain keeps it slightly more protected by storms and heavy weather. The good news is when it does rain, that only means more rainbows! The best time to visit Maui is typically either from April through June or September through November.

If you don’t want to make the long drive, hang out in the laid-back town of Paia, catch the sunrise on Mount Haleakala, visit a resort in Kihei, or snorkel with sea turtles at Kaanapali Beach. The island of Maui offers the perfect combination of tourist-friendly crowds, a wildly lush tropical climate, and plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Weather

Drier weather can be found on the south side areas of Kihei and Wailea as well as the west side tourist-heavy areas of Lahaina and Kaanapali, though it can get wetter the farther you head towards Napili and Kapalua. On the higher elevation areas such as Haleakala, it has even been known to snow during particularly cold winters.¹ Maui is also known as one of the windiest islands, which accounts for it being a windsurfing haven for lovers of the sport, especially on the north shore in winter.

The geography and many microclimates of Maui make it difficult to gauge specific weather patterns, as it can be sunny and bright on one side and pouring down rain on the other. It is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands (after Big Island) and encompasses 727 square miles.² Throughout the year across the majority of the island, the temperature typically ranges from 75 to 85 degrees F and only dips below 60 degrees F in the coastal areas during the coldest of winters.³

Crowds

Crowds on Maui tend to correlate with the vacation seasons on the mainland, so summer and winter are usually a bit more crowded than fall and spring.

Tourist Attraction Availability

One of the best things about Hawaii is that tourism season virtually runs year-round. That means tours and activities don’t take many breaks because there is always business to be had. The only exception? Whale watching season runs from November to May, and Maui is one of the best islands to spot the majestic creatures. Thanks to the island’s proximity to the Molokai Channel, where the water is shallow and warm, the visiting humpback whales love to enjoy the water around the island. Book a whale watching cruise with a local tour company (such as the Pacific Whale Foundation) or catch a ride on the ferry from Lahaina to Lanai to catch a glimpse.

As the weather can be quite unpredictable on Maui due to the tropical climate, tour companies often have contingency plans for the rain and will be happy to refund your money or reschedule should they cancel due to weather.

Price

As the fall and spring are the closest Hawaii gets to an “off season,” these months are when the hotels, airlines, and travel companies come out with the discounted prices. Many visitors choose to come to Maui during Christmas break, so expect higher prices and more crowds during the winter holidays.

Hurricane Season on Maui

While Hurricanes rarely hit Maui, it is important to be prepared if you plan to travel during Hawaii’s hurricane season from June to November. Pay attention to the local news, sign up for emergency alerts during your trip, and be sure to follow any instructions given by your accommodation.

January, February, March

The tail-end of the rainy season might bring slightly colder weather to the islands, at least compared to the rest of the year. Temperatures may range from the mid-70s F to low 80s F during the day and dip to the mid-60s F at night during these months.

• Maui Whale Festival: Since 1980, the Pacific Whale Foundation has held a series of events celebrating the annual migration of the humpback whales to Maui. The best part? Proceeds from the festival go towards research, education, and conservation programs.
• Chinese New Year Festival: This free event is held on Maui’s west side in the town of Lahaina on Front Street. Enjoy Chinese dragon dancing, music, and firecrackers to help ring in the new year.
• PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions: It’s no surprise that golf lovers flock to Maui to take advantage of the tropical climate and quality courses. Every January, you will find some of the best golfers in the world taking part in the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua.

April, May, June

As the school year comes to an end on the U.S. mainland, tourists travel to the island to enjoy their family vacations. Expect to see higher accommodation prices, more costly plane tickets, and bigger crowds at the beach during this time.

• Olukai Ho’olaule’a: Watch as professional paddlers race the eight-mile Makilo run on Maui’s north shore. Later on, the event features a “fun paddle” open to all ages and watercraft types.
