We’re stretching the boundaries of Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO) by including a barbecue spot in Kansas City, Kansas City (KCK). But, since Joe’s is the gold standard of local barbecue, it’s well worth the five-minute ride from Midtown, across city lines, to KCK. When you pull up to this functioning gas station/restaurant and see the wait, you might consider going somewhere else. Don’t. Get in line and order the burnt ends, ribs, and the Z-Man sandwich (brisket, provolone, onion rings, and barbecue sauce on a kaiser roll). It might take close to an hour to get your food, but it’s worth it.

Slap’s BBQ

Slap’s, like Joe’s, is another KCK barbecue spot with long lines and counter service, but what really makes this barbecue spot stand out is its two sauces. Their spicy sauce is traditional barbecue with a kick, while the sweet one tastes like honey. Yes, we’ve seen people drinking the sauces here like they’re cocktails, but we prefer dipping hush puppies or fries in it instead. Get here when they open at 11 and order the Mike Johnson sandwich (brisket, jalapeno sausage, and white sauce on a pretzel bun) since Slap’s shuts its doors as soon as they run out of food.

Pirate’s Bone Burgers

Come to Pirate’s Bone if you’re looking for a meat-free meal after eating enough barbecue for multiple lifetimes. This vegan diner is one-of-a-kind in a carnivorous city that can compete with the likes of Buenos Aires (or anywhere in Texas). We come here for the $5 meatless sliders that are just as awesome as the toppings they come with – including guacamole, queso, and aioli. After lunch, we highly suggest you order the chocolate brulee cake with the dairy-free horchata.

You know the place where the farmers have breakfast? Where old men gather to drink coffee and solve all the world’s political problems? In now-suburban Lee’s Summit, it is – and always has been – what is now known as Neighborhood Café.

Previously Ford’s, then Thompson’s, then Sue’s, then Neighbor’s and now Neighborhood – it’s the home of stick-to-the ribs home-style cooking. But what you really go for is the start and the finish.

Each meal (lunch and dinner) starts with complimentary cinnamon rolls made in house. Diabetics should keep at least 10 paces between them and the cinnamon rolls at all times.

And at the end, you have to have one of the dozen or so pies on the menu daily – again, all made in house.

Chez Elle

Step into Chez Elle and you’ll think you’ve passed through some cosmic wormhole into a Parisian creperie on the Champs Elysee.

Located in a historic theater building on the Kansas City’s Old West Side, it is exactly that – a restaurant stocked with crepes both savory and sweet, with combinations for every taste, with comfortable seating in an old world atmosphere to enjoy them in.

Try any variation on the Bonjour breakfast crepe for any meal – although I heartily recommend the bacon and Swiss option. The Au Chocolat is an excellent sweet treat. And if you don’t have a coffee with it – well, you’re just not getting into the spirit.

To get there, use your GPS – for out-of-towners, the route to the Old West Side can be confusing, but nearly all GPS programs will bring you faithfully there. Afterward, take some time to explore the neighborhood, among Kansas City’s oldest, yet with some new and interesting architecture thrown in the mix.

Italian Delight isn’t much to look at when you arrive. It’s in an old strip mall in an inner-ring suburb, with houses right out of “Leave it to Beaver” in every surrounding neighborhood. But step in and you can have some reasonably priced, yet tasty Italian fare.

You walk by what looks like a cafeteria line, with all kinds of treats behind a glass shield. At the end, you order at the cash register, then take a number to your table.

Most of my Italian-American friends tell me that the closer any Italian recipe is to its original, the calmer the spices, the more natural the flavors. That seems to be the case here. Salads are often topped with a vinegar-and-oil dressing that’s light, but tasty. The sauce has a good tomato flavor, apparently free from the need to hit you over the head with garlic and oregano.

They bill themselves as a “New York-style pizzeria.” I prefer their pastas, including spaghetti with Italian sausage, or their ravioli. And their impressive collection of salads is worth a look, including antipasto, olive salad or the tomato and cucumber.
