If you are a foreigner who wishes to visit Bali, either you are staying for leisure such as surfing or diving, visiting family and relatives, or attending social and cultural gatherings. You may need to obtain a visa first, before traveling to Indonesia especially if you are not staying in Bali.
I’ll start from the beginning. If you are a US citizen, you can enter Indonesia for up to 30 days without a visa. You can stay longer, but you have to get a visa at your nearest Indonesian embassy within 30 days of arrival. I found information online that it could take up to 8 weeks to process the visa so plan ahead. Also note that you have to have a return ticket when you apply for the visa – and you must enter Indonesia before the departure date on the ticket.

Which Bali visa is right for you?
Knowing which visa is right for you when planning your trip to Bali is key to being sure of the period of time you prefer to stay. The main options for tourists visiting Bali are:
1. Free Tourist Visa Bali (30 days)
Do you need a visa for Bali? No, but only if you’re not staying longer than 30 days. Bali, Indonesia, is free to enter without a visa, you will only get a date stamp in your passport on your arrival day. Stay up to a maximum of 30 days but note that you will not be able to extend your stay with this free tourist visa. Extending is only possible with a Visa on Arrival (read below). The penalty for overstaying is IDR 1,000,000 per day (70 USD).

2. Visa on Arrival Bali (up to 60 days)
If you have plans to stay longer than 30 days, purchase an Indonesian Visa on Arrival (VOA) when arriving at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. 68 nationalities can apply for the VOA. The VOA is valid for 30 days and can be extended in Indonesia for another 30 days (60 days in total). The visa costs $35 USD in cash; this can be paid in IDR, EUR, AUD, USD.
3. Social and Business Visa (up to 180 days)
The social and business visa for Bali, Indonesia, makes it possible for you to stay up to 6 months in Bali without the need to renew your visa. This visa is not for ‘holiday’ tourists, and to obtain this visa, you will need a visa agent and sponsor. Read how to apply for this visa.

COVID-19 measures Bali
Remember that Indonesia has, like many other countries, put restrictions in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
- Effective from 6 April 2022: International travellers to Indonesia ARE NOT required to show e-HAC on arrival. International travellers are only required to download PeduliLindungi App and complete their user profile in the app.
- International arrivals who have received the second or third dose of vaccine at least 14 days before departure can enter Bali after a health check on arrival.
- Those that have received only a first dose must show the following:
- Negative PCR 72 hours prior to departure OR Rapid antigen 24 hours prior to departure, with Proof of vaccination.
How to apply for a Visa on Arrival in Bali
The standard tourist visa in Indonesia, and therefore Bali too, is free and can be obtained by 68 different nationalities. There is no need to apply for a visa if you have no plans of staying longer than 30 days.
Price of Visa on Arrival in Bali
When staying longer than 30 days, you have to apply for a Visa on Arrival when arriving at the airport. The price for a Visa on Arrival in Bali, Indonesia, is 35 USD.
A quick reminder to check if you:
- Own a passport valid for a period of at least 6 months upon entering Bali.
- Have a confirmed return ticket or a ticket to your next destination.
- Sufficient funds to meet the expenses during your stay.
- Have cash on you when applying for a Visa on Arrival.
- Have your immigration/arrival card filled out.
Applying for a 6-month Visa (Social and Business Visa)
Visa agencies in Bali offer the service of arranging the visa process for you online. You can find these companies through Google or by contacting a hotel you want to stay in during your time in Bali.
Bali Visa Sponsor
A visa agent will act as a sponsor that you need to approve a social or business visa. Additionally, the agent will take care of the application, provide support with documents that you need for your flight, and on-arrival-guidance to lead you through immigration and customs as smoothly as possible.
How much does it cost?
The social visa price via a visa agent will be around 4-5 million IDR (~270-345 USD), depending on the agent. The price includes the sponsor letter and four extensions that are needed during the period of your visa.
How to get a visa extension in Bali, Indonesia
When it comes to extending your stay in Bali by another 30 days, you are required to have a Visa on Arrival purchased on arrival. To extend your visa in Bali takes 10 days, and you have two options to do it. 1) Do it yourself, or 2) Hire a visa agent to do it for you.
Extending yourself (option 1)
The cheapest option to extend your visa in Bali is obviously to do it yourself. However, it is necessary that you don’t have any travel plans for about ten days since you need to visit the Immigration office (location) three times during the visa extension process.
- First visit
Visit the immigration office in the early morning. Fill out the forms provided by the officer. Collect a queue ticket and turn in your forms and documentation once the number of your ticket is called. You will also leave your passport, don’t worry, it’s safe to do so. - Second visit
About 2 to 4 days later is your second visit, where the officer takes your photo and scans your fingerprints. They will provide you with a date for your third visit to collect your passport and visa extension. - Third visit
Collecting your passport with a new visa extension takes place about 7 to 10 days after your first visit. Be sure to check that the dates on your new visa are correct.
What to bring for a Bali Visa Extension
- 500.000 IDR that you have to pay on your first or second visit.
- Black ink pen to fill in forms.
- Your passport.
- A copy of your passport.
- One copy of your visa.
- Copy of your departure plane ticket.

Extending Bali visa via an agent (option 2)
Using a visa agent in Bali is a less time-consuming but more expensive option. The immigration office lines can be (very) lengthy at most times, so if you prefer to spend more time exploring Bali, this is a great option. The process works as follows:
- You fill in forms, collect your passport, Visa On Arrival ticket, and proof of a flight ticket out of Indonesia.
- A courier will pick up your documents.
- Once processed, visit the immigration office, where they will take fingerprints and a photo.
- When the documents are ready, they will be delivered to your residency.
We recommend asking restaurant owners if they know a person who provides the visa service. Alternatively, visit a visa office in one of the villages like Canggu or Seminyak.
How long does it take?
Extending through a visa agent can take anywhere from 2 up to 14 days. This totally depends on the kind of service you choose. Prices for this service vary from 50 to 170 USD. Our personal experience: Smaller visa service businesses, which aren’t known via Google, are much cheaper. We’ve done an extension twice this way costing 45 USD for a 7-day service.
