Are you an American citizen who wants to bring your parents to the United States? A lot of people are eligible for parent visas, including folks with green cards and U.S. Citizens. If you are a U.S. citizen, then the process is simple – that’s what we’ll cover today.

When you’re looking for a super visa, be careful what you wish for. If your parents or other dependent/s are not eligible to immigrate to Canada through the family sponsorship program, there are two options left open to them; one is to get landed immigrant status by following the express entry program, and the other is to apply for a visitor visa under the super visa category.

The super visa is a temporary resident permit that allows parents to visit Canada and remain here for up to 24 months. In order to come to Canada through the super visa program, you must meet the following requirements:

Super visa for parents income requirements

As part of the super visa program, you need to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself and your parents while they stay in Canada. The amount of money you need depends on the type of super visa your parent is applying for.

If your parent is applying for an open work permit, they will need to show that they have a minimum of $10,000 CAD per year. If they are applying for an open study permit, they will need to show that they have at least $11,000 CAD per year.

If you are applying for a closed work permit or closed study permit, your parent must show that they have $18,000 CAD per year.

The Super Visa is a Canadian immigration program that allows parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit their families in Canada for up to 24 months.

In order to be eligible for the Super Visa, your parent or grandparent must meet the following requirements:

  • they must be over the age of 18;
  • they must have sufficient financial resources to support themselves while in Canada, including medical insurance coverage and accommodation costs;
  • they must have an assurance of health coverage from a private health insurance company;
  • they must possess a valid passport that will allow them to return to their home country at the end of their visit; and
  • they must have proof of legal status in Canada (if applicable).

Can I Apply for My Parents’ Super Visa from Canada?

Only the Parent(s)/Grandparent(s) wanting to come to Canada can apply for their own super visa. However, there is some information about the sponsor that must be included when applying: 

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number and home address
  • Job title
  • Information about status in Canada (citizen or permanent resident), including proof of status
  • Family details, including names and dates of birth
  • Total number of persons living in the home
  • Letter of invitation
  • Proof of minimum income (see below) 

How to Apply for a Super Visa

1. Get Your Documents Ready

Before you apply for a super visa, you will need the following documents:

  • a letter of invitation from your child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada that includes
  • proof that your child or grandchild’s household meets the minimum necessary income
  • proof of payment for medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company
  • a document confirming that you had an immigration medical exam

How Do I Show Proof of Income?

The host can prove their income through any of the following :

  1. Send the most recent paper copy of the Notice of Assessment.
  2. Get your tax information directly from the CRA
  3. A most recent copy of the T4 or T1 from your employer (if you are self-employed, you may obtain a letter from an accountant confirming annual income)
  4. Original letter from your employer stating your title, job description, and salary
  5. Employment insurance pay stubs
  6. Proof of other sources of income, such as a pension statement, investments, etc.

What Is the Approval Rate for Getting a Super Visa?

The approval rate for a Canadian Super Visa is about 83%. If approved for this visa, you can expect the processing time for a super visa to take about 8 weeks after sending the application. Keep in mind, the time it takes to process the Super visa will also ultimately depend on the country you are from.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a super visa, you must:

  • be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • have a signed letter from your child or grandchild who invites you to Canada that includes:
    • a promise of financial support for the length of your visit
    • the list and number of people in the household of this person
    • a copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document
  • have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is:
    • valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
    • at least $100,000 coverage
    • have proof that the medical insurance has been paid (quotes aren’t accepted)

Financial support (proof of funds)

The child or grandchild who invites you must prove that their household meets the minimum necessary income. The following documents are examples of what can be used as proof of funds:

  • Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year
  • Employment Insurance stubs
  • employment letter including salary and date of hiring
  • pay stubs
  • bank statements
