The Australian Maritime Crew visa is a temporary visa, granted to crew members of vessels that come to Australia and intend to continue their voyage on the water immediately after they have disembarked in the territory of this country.

The Maritime Crew Visa (MCV) is an employer sponsored temporary visa to work in the maritime industry in Australia. The MCV requires sponsorship by a licensed shipping company or a State/Territory government department. The Maritime Crew Visa is one of the 457 visas under Australia’s Temporary Work (Skilled) Subclass 457 visa program.

Maritime Crew Visa is a temporary visa for three years issued to crewmembers under contract or subcontract to work on a ship while at sea and scientific research personnel on a research ship owned by a foreign government non-military ship on international voyages to Australia.

Requisites of the visa:-

  • You must be outside Australia
  • You must not be an Australian citizen
  • You must be working on non-military ships on international voyages to Australia(Ships must be used for commercial trading, carrying paying passengers, owned and operated by a foreign government to do scientific research or approved for ‘public vessel status’ by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade)
  • You must enter or leave Australia by Sea.
  • You must hold good health and moral conduct
  • You must not have any outstanding debts to the Australian Government or must have arranged to pay the same if any.

Privileges of the Visa:-

  • Allows you to enter Australia through sea and work that meets your ship’s standard operational requirements while you are in Australia.
  • Allows you to travel to and fro any number of times within the visa validity period

Maritime Crew Visa ends if:-

  • You are engaged in a work other than your ship’s standard operational requirements while you are in Australia.
  • You enter Australia by air on transit visa without holding any other visa except maritime crew visa and do not report within five days on the ship.

You enter on any other visa except a maritime crew visa, and it ends or cancels

  • You finish off working on the ship and do not leave Australia, have any other visa or start working on another non-military ship within five days of signing off.
  • Australian Customs and Border Protection Service declares your ship to be ‘imported’. You do not leave Australia to have any other visa or start working on another non-military ship within five days of signing off.

Additional charges:-

  • Medical Examination:-To be paid directly to the doctor conducting a medical examination
  • Police check:-To the corresponding authorities in the respective countries where you have lived for more than 6/12 months depending on the visa subclass
  • Certification/Translation of Docs-Depending on the certifying person and number of copies to be certified.
