San Diego Unified School Calendar | 2020-2021

If you’re a parent in San Diego Unified School District, we’ve got some great news for you: your kids will be enjoying an extra week of summer vacation this year!

Summer break starts on Monday, June 1st and ends on Friday, June 5th. Then school starts back up on Monday, July 29th and runs until Friday, August 30th. That’s right—your kids will get almost two months off this summer!

We know that there are a lot of things to do while they’re out of school—we’ve got some great ideas in our “Summer Fun” section. We hope you’ll check out some of our fun activities that your kids can enjoy while they’re on break from school!

The 2020-2021 school year calendar and days off are below.

  • The 2020-2021 school year begins on August 16, 2020 and ends on June 20, 2021.
  • Below you will find the dates for each month of the school year:

Start of 2021-2022 Schoolyear

Summer is over. It’s time to get back into the swing of things: school, work, and your favorite activities. You have plenty on your plate now that you’re no longer lounging by the poolside or munching on popsicles. The start of this new academic year will make you feel like a kid again as school crushes are reestablished and new friendships take root. There’s nothing better than getting back into routine after a relaxing summer vacation!

August 16: First Day of School

In order to be prepared for the first day of school, it’s important to know what day your district will be starting up again. The following is a list of districts in San Diego County, Los Angeles County, Orange County, Ventura County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County and San Francisco:

  • Alpine Union School District August 13
  • Bonsall Unified School District August 14
  • Carlsbad Unified School District August 13
  • Chula Vista Elementary School District August 14
  • Coronado Unified School District August 13
  • Del Mar Union Elementary School District August 14
  • El Cajon Valley Union High School District (ECVUHSD) August 12 -15th depending on school location; non-core classes resume Aug. 20

September 5: Labor Day

Labor Day is a federal holiday in America, marking the end of summer and the unofficial last day of school. It falls on the first Monday in September every year.

Labor Day was first observed in New York City, on September 5, 1882. However, its origins can be traced back to several worker-oriented celebrations held prior to that date by various unions and labor organizations across the country.

In 2019, Labor Day will fall on Monday September 2nd. In 2020 and 2021 it will be observed on Tuesday September 7th and Wednesday September 5th respectively.

The first quarter has come to an end and it’s time for your child’s second quarter to begin. This also means that spring break will be coming soon. The school calendar for the second quarter is as follows:

January 3-6 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day (no school)

February 14 – Presidents’ Day (no school)

March 22-25 – Spring Break!

October 11: Columbus Day

This day is a US federal holiday honoring Christopher Columbus, who sailed the ocean blue in 1492. It’s also a day for celebrating Italian-American heritage and culture. If you’re lucky enough to have your last day of school fall on this date, you might get a long weekend to go along with it! Some schools close early or have no school at all on Columbus Day because so many students are part of an ethnic group that celebrates it as an important holiday.

November 11: Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States and is observed on November 11. It’s a day to honor all American veterans for their service and sacrifice. It also commemorates the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.

Veterans Day is observed by many cities and towns across America with parades, ceremonies, memorials and other events to honor our veterans. These events often include marching bands, military vehicles like tanks or helicopters that fly overhead during the parade or ceremony, reenactments of battles fought by soldiers from previous wars (such as Civil War reenactments), speeches by politicians and other dignitaries who served in the military themselves (like presidents) calling up memories from their own time spent serving America during wartime…and sometimes even fireworks!

November 22-26: Thanksgiving Break

Thanksgiving Break is the time to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy a delicious meal. It is also a time to reflect on what you are thankful for. The break is a chance to spend time with family and friends.

December 20: End of 2nd Quarter, 3rd Quarter Begins

On December 20, the end of the second quarter, school will be closed. School resumes on December 21.

  • On December 22, school is closed.
  • On December 23 and 24, school will be open as usual but there won’t be classes because it’s a weekend.
  • On December 25 (Christmas Day), schools are closed in the U.S., which means that students get two days off from class: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! In other countries around the world where people celebrate Christmas on different dates than Americans do (like Canada), some schools may also have their own winter break during this time period too—but that doesn’t mean that every country does! If you’re a student, winter break is a time for relaxation and enjoying the holidays. You can spend time with family and friends, do school work, or participate in extra-curricular activities.

January 17: Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

The third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, is a federal holiday. It’s a day to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and reflect on the Civil Rights movement that he led. This national day of observance also marks his birthday (January 15), which was declared a national holiday for the first time by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.
